Palm out, Apple in
If there is a moment in computers time that I will not forget is the moment when the Palm Pilot won over the Newton, oh men, this was definitely a trendsetting time….
This little agenda, with no more power than the almighty Newton won the grace of millions of people because of its size and usability (nobody wants to carry a Giant agenda ala Newton)… so Apple cut the Newton, destroy its future, disbanded the project and its engineers and forgot about the PDA market at the same time…
Today Palm seems that it has not learned from its expertises and has let the PDA market slips into its hand to some new players, the cell phone industry, that is adding new capabilities to the smartphone, Microsoft, with all the money in the world created the Windows Mobile blah blah blah, the Blackberry, which is eating Palm candies, and now Apple…
Apple is in place to takes away Palm business in a manner that will make (the Palm over the Newton battle) looks child play, Apple is the last company that enters in the smartphone arena and is poised to turn it upside down.
Apple has the Newton expertise, the applications that will support the iphone strategy are the best known, (iphoto to manages pictures taken with the phone camera, Soundtrack, to edit the ringtones, Itunes, to sync music and video to the phone).
What has Palm to offer? The new smartphone called Centro, which is will be cheaper, but not innovative, it is a new evolution of the Treo, the Folio, which I consider to be in the same category of those Origami ultra pc touted by Microsoft as the REAL THING, but that ended being a big flunk.
So for this moment, palm is out and apple is in, let’s hope palm find its way.
