What happen is suddenly Apple buys Corel?
When Microsoft delivers its graphics applications (Acrylic, Expression, Silverlight) all the attention will be for the cat fight between Microsoft and Adobe and the most graphic designers friendly platform will put on hold for a while, there isn’t news about Microsoft porting those applications to Mac OS X and Adobe will put all its energy to brings out more applications that take advantages of Windows technologies.
But there are 3 ways where Apple can take this brawl in its advantage:
1) Buys Adobe and stand up against Microsoft, letting them know that you can hold up for a while and promise more platform dependent features based on Mac OS.
2) Create from the ground up a new graphic suite to compete with both and take control of the graphic business and the future of the platform.
3) Buy Corel, with more than 100 millions users this graphic suite only needs more mac specific features. Corel Marketcap is $322,457,360, which is a cheap price for an application like this. Apple has done it when it bought Final Cut Pro from Macromedia, but failed to buy Xres to compete with Photoshop.
Corel will get the treatment it deserves and will be streamlined with a more mac friendly interface and updated features. Then Apple can forget about the catfight between the A and the M.
Apple is getting rid of is dependency on Adobe in some areas, Video with Final Cut Pro and Imovie, DVD Studio Pro and iDVD; Photography store and Manipulation with Aperture and iphoto; and is taking on Microsoft with its own Office Suite Iwork, with Numbers, Keynote and Pages, so it is slow but firm.
