Can Blackberry or Palm gives Apple a run?

Well… I don’t think so, while RIM is reported to be gaining some marketshares away from the iPhone, it is still too soon to declare a winner, this is the second major upgrade for the iPhone while the Blackberry has suffered a dozen or more. It is important to notice that the iPhone that can give RIM some headaches, because is packed with the same or even more business features, those that have helped Blackberry become the king.

Apple has set its sight on the Enterprise and has promised features what will help Apple master this new and complicated market and put some pressure to RIM at the same time.

There is excitement among developers and major corporations are starting to realize that the iPhone is more than another smartphone, it is a platform, some have commited to bring the most compelling suit of applications to meet any business need. IBM, Sun, NetSuite, Salesforce, even Microsoft has been babbling about the possibility of an Office version for the iphone.

Styletap is promising Palm emulation on the iphone, increasing automatically the numbers of business applications available for the device.

So, if we were to declare a winner, there is not better time than the next June 9th, when we will see what Apple has been planning for the iPhone 2.0 and how Blackberry and others response to Apple entrance into the Mobile.

SMSD iPhone SMS Delete And Forwarding Application
This application much like Wetool addresses some of the shortcomings of the SMS messaging application on the iPhone. The major features which are included on SMSD which Apple has neglected to add are deletion of individual messages, forwarding of SMS messages to groups of people and a built in character counter. The application is at version 0.09 but apparently seems stable in regards to the advertised features.

weTool For The iPhone
Aaron Jang has released weTool, a native iPhone application that enables you to delete individual sms and call entries along with the ability to forward SMS messages to multiple recipients, a feature that Apple hasn’t implemented as of yet. It also gives you an option to save your sms messages to your notepad and the transition effects between switching screens is pretty cool. The download is only available as a pxl file on hackint0sh Now available on Installer. Point Safari at or add Source via Installer at http://app.weiphone.com/installer/. Two downloads are below with the first download having a circular rotation transition between screens and the second having a page flip transition effect. Let Aaron Jang know which transition effect you like better on the poll so maybe you can influence him to incorporate it in his newer release. According to Aaron, he’s got more than 15 different page transitions. Hopefully those will be available on future releases. V0.3.7.1 now available with 17 different user selectable transitions along with a different menu system.

iPass today announced service availability for Windows Mobile 6 devices. Users of the iPass Mobile Office service for enterprises and iPassConnect™ mobility service for individuals can now connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi using their Windows Mobile 6 smartphone and handheld devices. iPass plans to support the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch later this year and intends to support Wi-Fi-enabled Blackberry devices as well.

“The popularity of consumer-driven handheld devices changes the paradigm for enterprise IT by allowing people to be productive using Web-based applications through their own smartphone” said Joel Wachtler, VP of marketing and strategy at iPass. “IT cannot ignore these devices, and instead must ensure that workers can be productive using them and that they don’t create an unreasonable burden for the business through expensive connectivity, poor security, or high support costs. iPass’ mission is to simplify the growing complexity of enterprise mobility, and expanding support to these platforms is a key element of our strategy”

With more than 100,000 business-class hotspots worldwide, (also announced today), iPass Wi-Fi connectivity gives smart phone users a high performance, inexpensive alternative to 2.5G and 3G access provided by cellular providers. For international business travelers, the cost savings can be especially significant when they use Wi-Fi to avoid the high roaming fees mobile operators charge for out-of-country usage. In one recent, well-publicized incident*, a UK-based smartphone user was billed more than $22 thousand dollars by their cellular provider for downloading large data files in Germany.

In addition, the iPass Wi-Fi network can deliver broadband access in places where 3G doesn’t reach. Because 3G networks are normally rolled out first in metropolitan areas, those outside the city must often rely on modem-like 2.5G technology, or may have no cellular data coverage at all. Even in large cities, high-speed coverage isn’t ubiquitous. Tests conducted by industry analyst and wireless benchmarking firm Novarum show that true 3G connections are available only 60-70% of the time in major U.S. urban centers, due to hills, trees and other obstacles to reception. Lastly, 3G performance can degrade rapidly when in-building, and in these cases it may be the local Wi-Fi hotspot or WLAN that provides the only viable Internet access option.

Sybase iAnywhere announced availability of support for Apple iPhone within its Information Anywhere® Suite. Information Anywhere now enables IT organizations to provide secure delivery of Lotus Domino and Microsoft Exchange enterprise email to iPhone users, in addition to a broad range of other mobile devices. Buzz Technologies releases Email Anywhere for the iPhone

In a desperate bid to increase use by corporate users, Apple is currently in production to build support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync for its iPhone device. Buzz Technologies Inc has today released Email Anywhere, an email platform that has accomplished the Microsoft Active Sync support already. The service allows any corporation to have all their emails loaded onto the Buzz Platform making them instantly available on any remote device including iPhone. The service features will allow IT departments to more easily monitor the devices on a corporate network as well as enforce security in the event of a lost device.

Apple is holding an event dedicated to the iPhone today, and the first major announcement is that this smartphone will soon get support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync.

The company hopes this will go a long way toward making the iPhone more accepted by, and useful to, business people. Apple’s long-term goal is to lure companies away from their BlackBerries.
