Apple is growing from all sides, its mobile business has been the engine that accelerated this grow, being the iPhone, iPod and now the iPad the cash cows that provides fresh green dollars to Apple’s bank account while the mac business has grown slowly but consistently, Macbooks and iMacs are everywhere, even in places you won’t expect to see a mac.

This growth has helped Apple get more than 10% of USA domestic computer business for the first time in years according to IDC, securing the third spot in the US PC vendor chart.

So for Apple the Mac is still relevant and for this ocasion, Apple is sending invitation for a October 20th “Back to the Mac”, an event that could shed some light about the next major version of Mac OS X and marks the end of Snow Leopard and the introduction of a whole new cat-based nickname: lion.

Lion could be a whole new Operating System that brings some iOS features back to the mac like multitouch and add more than 200,000 applications that may run freely on the desktop or inside the dashboard, this will be a revitalization of the platform together with an unified environment for easy and quick development of applications entitled to run on Macs or mobile devices.

Going back to the mac could also means providing more hardcore tools for game developers and adding new media and tools to create hardcore mobile newspapers and magazines for the iPad just using Keynote or Pages to help will accelerate the mass adoption of digital of this new kind of media in a broader market.

The reborn of Mac is due in part to Mac OS X, the power behind it and its industry-wise strength as the core, a power that has been transfered to Apple’s mobile devices with iOS and the heart of the next major revolution: AppleTV.

Apple is loosening its restrictions on the AppStore and on its way to do business, licensing DVR IP from Rovi means that every mac or iOS device could act as a wireless media hub for other iOS or non-iOS devices that accept AirPlay.

Today news is that the next major release of Final Cut Pro will be delayed to 2011 as the closer date and that new features and a complete interface overhaul could be put on hold until 2013, this news has been around since the begining of the year, Apple is putting too much resources into its mobile business and the Mac as a platform is relegated to a second class, the mac platform is still virgin, there is a enormous potential within the Mac OS X and its applications, but Apple success in the mobile business has changed its main focus, now the Mac is seen as the perfect mobile platform and not as the graphic design universe, a title that Apple keeps to its chest, but that has been losing market buzz because Apple transition from a computer market to a mobile busines.

The Mac is growing, slowly and the Halo Effect is working, but just when the Mac is poised to grow a little faster Apple launched the iPad, another mobile device that will in one way or another cannibalize the Macbook and the whole OS X for desktop and there is not sign that
a full-OS X tablet could hit the market any date soon that could help the mac desktop business to grow exponentially.

There’s nothing new in Mac OS X, not innovations that capture new users imagination, the system is taking a long vacation, there isn’t any rumor about what will be added to the next 10.7 or any new implementation that could help the whole platform expand for itself, but We are hearing about merging iOS features with the Mac OS X desktop to help mobile applications to run freely, this is nothing new and the platform is getting dust without its own innovation cycle and while Apple polishes the iOS Microsoft is adding new feature to Windows 7, those features are already inside Mac OS X and there is nothing to fear, but perception is that Windows 7 is new while Mac OS X, even with the same features, looks old and quasi-abandoned.

Apple stated that they has transformed into the bigger mobile company in the world and that’s a good thing, but at Mac OS X expense, all major implementation, new features, tweaks and more are added to iOS, the little brother.

I would like to see Mac OS X advertising elsewhere, new features that transform how We interact with computers and new and amazing applications working on Mac OS X, the mobile business is good, thank God, but I spend more time working on my Mac Pro than surfing the net with the iPad and from a business perspective Apple is not taking advantage of Mac OS X as a real and competitive OS to displace Windows in any major market, it seems that Apple is satisfied with how Mac OS X is only related to actual mac users.

Hardware acceleration for Adobe Flash is finally a Go, after years of poor performance and a long battle between Apple and Adobe, but hey, the hardware accelaration is only available for Macs running Mac OS X Snow Leopard and using NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, GeForce 320M or GeForce GT 330M graphics cards. Anyway it’s an already expected/welcome feature for Flash.

Adobe insists that this new Flash Preview will bring real H.264 video hardware decoding with performance up to two-thirds reduction in CPU utilization for 1080p H.264 video playback
on Mac OS X 10.6.3 and that this feature will be added to the final Flash 10.1 to be shipped later this year.

Apple points to Adobe for the poor performance of Flash and Adobe denies it alleging it was Apple’s fault for not supplying the Hardware Acceleration API used by Quicktime, now We have to evaluate Flash to see who the hell is telling the true.

Apple today introduced a new LED based 24″ Cinema Display especially designed for the Macbooks, featuring the new Display Port, 1920 x 1200 resolution, stereo speakers, a MagSafe to power your Macbook, a USB port.

While the design is beautiful and the added technology makes it more interesting the price is too high for what it offers, it is a iMac case that behave like a Display but without the iMac and if I want to have a bigger display for my new Macbook this is not the correct one, with this money I can buy a iMac 24″ refurbished that will be more productive than an dull Display. Sorry Apple, not this time

The $899 price is tooo high for a secondary display, instead the smarter thing to do is spend it in two or even 3 display from Samsung, while I won’t discuss that the display looks beautiful, but please the price is out of proportion when you can buy an iMac 24″ refurbished for the same price and even if you need more thand that, you can buy a Epson or any other Projector that you can hook up your Macbook.

Check these offers, while these displays are not Cinema, they look interesting and their beauty relies on their price, check it….

Dell S2409W Black 24″ Widescreen LCD Monitor $324
Samsung T260HD 25.5″ Widescreen LCD Monitor 526.99
Samsung SyncMaster 245BW Black 24″ Widescreen LCD Monitor $299.00

All prices come from PC World.com

I would like to see some improvement on Apple TV, that Apple polishes this little box and turn it into a home media server with features that suit every member of the family, here is what I want on Apple TV:

1. Media Server
If Apple adds more HD space and more processor power together with a multimedia version of Mac OS X Server that receive our iphone, ipod and digital camera content wirelessly and broadcast it to every single device on the house.

2. Live Email
A home server that let you see your incoming emails in a widget while watching your favorite tv program.

3. Tags r US
A tagging system that let you mark any given program and that the tagged program get recorded in the background and upload it to your ipod or iphone for your traveling pleasure.

4. The usual DVR functions
Record live tv, picture in picture, ad skipping and Parental Control.

5. A Learn More System:
A direct connection to Wikipedia or WikipediaTV, something that let you understand what is being talked on tv, a reference system that update you as it goes, collecting words, cities, countries and personalities for an On Deman or for a later visit.

6. Ical Connect
A widget system that provides you with schedul information, just like a pop window at the bottom of your tv screen. The ical system can be updated remotely or can be programmed to broadcast to your iphone or ipod touch your schedule.

7. Wireless Keyboard
To set all these a keyboard will be required, a small, lightweight and wireless keyboard must provides access to the Home Media Server and will let you interact with the Live Rating System.

8. Live Rating System.
LRS is a system that let you rate instantly the quality of the content, if is suitable for minors or young children or what is the real audience for this kind of program. It will be learning from people to people and then this information can be access on demand everytime you need it as a reference.

To make this system work flawlessly Apple must collect information, not personal information, geographic location or people habits, just what people answer via the system. This will create an even better Parental Control.

Feel free to add your wishes to this list, send me yours to info@whataboutmac.com for a future update.

Apple has been a consumers company from day one and all its design and innovation work has served to position Apple in the front of the pc industry, Apple sales have skyrocketed every single quarter, but silently the enterprise sale has been not so excellent, Apple has managed to make son inroad into Business America and now that Windows Vista has been a fiasco, a large number of IT managers have started to look to Mac OS X and Mac as a solid alternative to Microsoft failed upgrade.

But for Apple really make a huge progress into Businesses the easier, smarter and riskier thing to do is to set free Mac OS X Server and let it runs on every single machine on the planet.

Apple won’t lose anything, this is a win-win situation and OS X Server won’t ever cannibalized the Consumer version and will provide fresh cash and market share immediately. Imagine Dell, HP, IBM, Sun, Acer and all the other PC companies providing Mac OS X Server as a real alternative to Windows and Linux. Mac OS X Server has a cheaper price against Windows Servers and is easier to use and more solid and virus proof and can work in Windows already deployed networks without a hitch.

It is a smarter move if Apple realizes that OS X Consumer Version and Server that they will get more on return selling millions of OS X Server than selling a few thousand Macs loaded with the Server, the Server price is 5 times more than the Consumer Version. So if Apple gets to enroll those big enterprise sellers like Dell and HP and provide an easy to migrate path together with a real business strategy that combines collaboration and innovation, Apple can win the IT heart and their pockets too.

Mac OS X Server is rock solid and what is missing in this elegant, easy to deploy and robust system is a strategy from Apple, maybe they don’t want to sell it to corporation, so let others do the job and keeps tuning it to take advantages of every single machine on the market. Apple can do it and you can bet that Dell and HP are ready to help.

Long live Mac OS X Server, long live Mac OS X.

I have never seen a marketing material for Mac OS X Server, on paper, internet or television and I think is time to place it into the enterprise where it really belongs.

Applications for the iphone and ipod touch are growing like bad grass, faster than you can kill it and every single day you notice new and amazing services, tools and utilities for this new platform. We collected a bunch of them, those that we believe are the most important ones to hang out… In the next part we will add more business related applications. Please notice that some of fthis applications can damage your iphone, a fresh restore could help but act wisely, we are not affiliated with the designers/programmers or vendors of these applications, we only provide this list as an recommendation, we are not receiving any kind of endorsement from their respective owners. We really don’t know them, but appreciate their time.

iPhoneeBooks
Read books using your iPhone! Download books from online repositories, like Project Gutenberg, and enjoy reading them with this nice tool. SMSD iPhone SMS Delete And Forwarding Application
This application much like Wetool addresses some of the shortcomings of the SMS messaging application on the iPhone. The major features which are included on SMSD which Apple has neglected to add are deletion of individual messages, forwarding of SMS messages to groups of people and a built in character counter. The application is at version 0.09 but apparently seems stable in regards to the advertised features.

Features
Delete individual messages
Different views for incoming and outgoing messages
Templates
Backup all message through mail.
Compose new messages. (Apple got this right.)
Reply to messages. (Well, Apple did not miss this one.)
Forward messages.
Support for concatenated SMS (long SMS).
Send/Forward messages to multiple contacts.
Character counter.
Send Contact Information through message.
To install manually:

Put the extracted zip dir (SMSD.app) in /Applications on iPhone. From v0.09 onwards, you will also have to copy com.amrut.iphone.SMSD.plist to /Library/LaunchDaemons. And last but not the least, dont forget to set executable permissions for SMSD and SMSDNotifier files.

The download is only available as a pxl file on hackint0sh Now available on Installer. Point Safari at or add Source via Installer at http://app.weiphone.com/installer/.
