Verizon is ready to marry the devil, from one side it’s selling its own version of the Droid, an Android based mobile phone that has been pitched against the iPhone, while on the other side it’s secretly courting Apple for its iPhone and now the iPad and its recent introduction of iPad on their nationwide stores means that Verizon is playing all its cards, betting for Android, but praying for the iPhone. This is nothing new, Verizon is just doing business, changing the default search engine inside their Android phones and getting some exclusivity for the Skype.

But, hey, wasn’t Verizon the one that tell us that their Droid X does things that the iPhone won’t ever do or wasn’t Verizon almost launching its Android based Tablet and the Samsung Tab 7? Yep, the same Verizon that has been laughing in the face of iPhone users is now selling the iPad and soon the iPhone, I would like to see how those phandroids are feeling.

In the end, the iPhone is the real deal and Verizon is just taking the Android platform for a ride, it has been good, but not good as the iPhone and Verizon knows it, that’s the main reason for the rumors about a Verizon iPhone, just expect to see what Verizon would be able to do to sell the iPhone to its Android users or will just turn the back on them when the iPhone is available?

Apple is out to sell truck-load of iPhone and iPads and Verizon is in need to have a real mobile phone that can help them compete to AT&T or at least put them in the same category and the iPhone would do that for Verizon and its mobile business, Android could just wait.

Google has stated that Android as we know is not designed with tablets in mind and won’t be for months as Google prepare its own Tablet OS, but it doesn’t stop tablet makers from putting Android inside its mobile devices that end up being just like giant smartphone, because to access the Android Market is mandatory to have a 3G connection.

That’s the reason the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 is nothing more than a big Android-based phone forced to behave like a tablet, something totally different from the iOS perspective, that it’s a tablet OS transformed into a mobile phone device.

We saw yesterday the introduction to the US market of the new Dell Streak 5 tablet, a combination of mobile phone with a mini tablet, but what really attracted me was the consumer-level price ($299 w/2 year contract /$549.99 w/No Contract) of this new toy, that if compared with other mobile phone will be a total flop when you can get the iPhone 4 for $199 with Retina Display and the latest iOS.

Don’t get me wrong, the Dell Streak is an interesting device and will have its followers only when the price comes down to reality, the Streak is too pricey compared with the iPad or the iPhone 4 and even compared with other Android Phones, the 5″ screen is nice but too much for a phone and not big enough to compete with the 9.7″ of the iPad.

The Dell Streak will only cannibalize sales of other Android-based phones, but don’t forget the Streak is loaded with an older 1.6 version of Android and that won’ look too good to some fandroids out there.

Can the Dell Streak 5 compete with the iPad? Nope, it is a monster phone or a mini iPad and the price is bigger than the iPhone 4 and almost the same of the iPad, so Dell must be crazy enought to call it a tablet and try to place it at the same iPad’s level, these devices are totally differents and the experience is will be slightly different, but if price and size or a ancient Android version is not a problem, then the Dell Streak 5 will kill the iPad and the iPhone 4 this friday, something that will be totally possible only in the eyes of a few fandroids with severe myopia.

Apple today reported a 6.9 million iphones shipped the last quarter, passing by 3 million the 10 million mark set by Apple when the iPhone was introduced, something that places Apple in a healthy position in a industry that live with a shrinking earning margin.

Apple has done a remarkable job beating RIM, selling 13 million of iPhone and generating enough money to guarantee the innovation at home. Apple has taken the market by storm, created a trend in mobile telephony and mandate what and how to do business, it is growing and surpassing established companies that used to be the innovators, but have seen its business eroded completely by Apple strong presence in that sector.

Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola have shown that, while the were driving the market, today is strongly difficult for them to compete with Apple with the same level of innovation and price.

The problem in competing with the iPhone is that Apple is an unpredictable company, that really know how and when sacrify or risk its business to conquer a broader market, Apple killed the most requested iPod and introduced a refined version, risking to lose sales while trying to provide a better product, this is something nobody would even try, but that move resulted in better sales and better quarter earnings.

So, if rivals are thinking that this success will put Apple to rest while they prepare a iPhone killing strategy, they must wake up now, Apple won’t rest on its laurels and the next iPhone killer is created by Apple itself.

In an effort to congratulate freshmen at Abiliene Christian University, the board decided to offer all freshmen a free Apple product of their choice: iPhone or iPod Touch. According to the university, both devices will have pre-installed applications that are suppose to help students in academic activities and studying, but I have to wonder if that is really true.

Of course that students are pleased with receiving a free iPhone, and according to freshmen named Halie Davis, the usage of the phone on class is regular.

Tungle, the free business-class meeting co-ordination service that eliminates the wasted time and frustration of scheduling meetings among many busy people, continues to increase its network of users with the release of it new interface for iPhone™ users. Apple has so far sold 5.4 million iPhones worldwide, based on data from the end of Apple’s fiscal second quarter, which ended in March.

Tungle is a Microsoft Outlook plug-in that empowers users to coordinate meetings with anyone, across platforms – including iCal, Google Calendar, Lotus Notes, the BlackBerry and now the iPhone – as well as across organizations, time zones and even individuals not using Tungle.

“Smart phone users have demanded a rich interface, real-time information and easy access to their busy calendars.” says Marc Gingras, Tungle CEO. “Tungle is a great fit for this audience. Extending our interface to iPhone™ users means they now have a simple to use and powerful tool to coordinate meetings quickly and efficiently anytime, anywhere away from their computer.”

With Tungle’s new iPhone interface, those checking email on their iPhone device can receive a Tungle meeting invitation with a link. A click on the link launches a browsing session to the Tungle scheduling site formatted for their device. There, they update their availability. Once the meeting is booked, they receive a booked meeting confirmation, formatted for their iPhone calendar.

The Tungle Beta Pilot
A free service, Tungle has been in open beta since April 16, 2008. Anyone who wants to start using Tungle, including the BlackBerry service, can simply visit www.tungle.com to download. The recently launched Tungle Outlook plug-in takes less than 30 seconds to install. It automatically synchronizes with users’ Outlook address books and calendars, eliminating any configuration or complicated setup. This information is kept secure and locally on the user’s machine, and is not uploaded or shared with anyone else or with Tungle. Its IM-like user interface makes it easy for users to understand and to start using within seconds.

I would like to see some improvement on Apple TV, that Apple polishes this little box and turn it into a home media server with features that suit every member of the family, here is what I want on Apple TV:

1. Media Server
If Apple adds more HD space and more processor power together with a multimedia version of Mac OS X Server that receive our iphone, ipod and digital camera content wirelessly and broadcast it to every single device on the house.

2. Live Email
A home server that let you see your incoming emails in a widget while watching your favorite tv program.

3. Tags r US
A tagging system that let you mark any given program and that the tagged program get recorded in the background and upload it to your ipod or iphone for your traveling pleasure.

4. The usual DVR functions
Record live tv, picture in picture, ad skipping and Parental Control.

5. A Learn More System:
A direct connection to Wikipedia or WikipediaTV, something that let you understand what is being talked on tv, a reference system that update you as it goes, collecting words, cities, countries and personalities for an On Deman or for a later visit.

6. Ical Connect
A widget system that provides you with schedul information, just like a pop window at the bottom of your tv screen. The ical system can be updated remotely or can be programmed to broadcast to your iphone or ipod touch your schedule.

7. Wireless Keyboard
To set all these a keyboard will be required, a small, lightweight and wireless keyboard must provides access to the Home Media Server and will let you interact with the Live Rating System.

8. Live Rating System.
LRS is a system that let you rate instantly the quality of the content, if is suitable for minors or young children or what is the real audience for this kind of program. It will be learning from people to people and then this information can be access on demand everytime you need it as a reference.

To make this system work flawlessly Apple must collect information, not personal information, geographic location or people habits, just what people answer via the system. This will create an even better Parental Control.

Feel free to add your wishes to this list, send me yours to info@whataboutmac.com for a future update.

The ipod and the iphone have proven to be the most sucessful duo, the ipod has taken the portable music industry by storm and now the iPhone is doing the same thing for the mobile industry, but Apple is not cashing or taking advantages totally in the marketing arena.

Here is the point:
The marketing behind the ipod was and is still excellent, trendsetting, joyful and has done its job, put the ipod everywhere in an entertainming manner, everybody enjoys those well done ads, the music, the images, the strategy worked for the ipod. With the iphone, Apple has turned to the other side, showing what to do with your newly iphone. While this is a direct to your brain marketing, it is totally different from the ipod one.

Good, the ipod and the iphone have received thousand of free TV exposure, people showing their favorite mp3 or smartphone to everybody and this represents a bigger than expected and unpaid marketing campaign.

But hey, Where is the Yanqui’s based iPod or iPhone? Or the David Ortiz fully loaded iPod?

And there is where Apple is still sleeping, there is a bigger and more fanatic audience out there that is willing to have a Baseball or Basketball iPod, loaded with the most important moments of their favorite team. It won’t be any difficult for Apple to partner with the MLB or other Sport Association in USA or in any other country. Imagine a Manchester United iPd, damn, it will even give more and more exposure to the ipod, because the Manchester fanatics really love everything about their team. Apple has the RED Product iPod, why not put the Sox at the end and give us a piece of collection?

It is time for Apple to come to the Social and sport is one of the most social event in the country with millions of fans worldwide that buy T-shirts, caps, bats, watches, mugs and everything related to their team, imagine the potentials and advantages the will and have if it is marketed toward this sea of ready to spend people.
