Microsoft is reporting that certain bug in Apple Safari for Windows could mean security problems for Wndows users opening the door for attackers to run unauthorized softwares on a victim’s computer.

But the timing for this report is strange, this same week Net Applications reported that Safari has been gaining marketshare at Internet Explorer expense. Got it?

Apple should investigate if the problem is in its camp or provide a quick fix to this threat, but Microsoft should tell Apple where is the real threat, if it is at Safari, Apple must solve it inmediately or if it is on the Platform, then Microsoft should provide what’s needed, because a similar problem plague Internet Explorers for Windows XP and Vista and not fix is in place.

Rivals are not sincere, but both parties should agree and colaborate to fix this new security problem.

As part of its monthly “Patch Tuesday” schedule Microsoft has issued a number of bulletins about 12 security vulnerabilities in its software. Seven of the vulnerabilities affect Microsoft Excel, and could allow a hacker to gain remote control over a user’s computer by a maliciously crafted spreadsheet. Alarmingly, the vulnerability is not just found in the Windows version of Microsoft Excel, but also for Mac Office 2004 and the recently released Office 2008 for Macintosh.

Experts note that the Excel flaws were discovered in January, and recommends that organizations roll-out the patches as a matter of urgency, as some of them could enable hackers to access data on a vulnerable PC or Macintosh, or run malicious code such as a worm.

“Windows users may be fairly accustomed to installing patches from Microsoft — but this a timely reminder that Apple Mac users need to be just as diligent when it comes to matters of computer security,” said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos. “Whether you run a PC or a Mac it’s important to take these latest security bulletins from Microsoft seriously and ensure that your business is properly protected.”

Other flaws detailed in the Microsoft security bulletins affect other components of the Microsoft Office product suite. Home users of Microsoft Windows can visit update.microsoft.com to have their systems scanned for Microsoft security vulnerabilities.

The explosive growth of the iPhone market signals a shift from home and office based communication to communication on the go. With the recent release of their latest service VPN Mobile, Secure-Tunnel.com offers this segment of wireless users the highest level of identity protection available for mobile devices.

To ensure the highest level of identity protection for mobile devices, global leader in privacy and identity protection technology Secure-Tunnel.com recently released a new service called VPN Mobile for mobile phones that use PPTP VPN technology.

The new service protects mobile users’ identity and data as information is transmitted wirelessly, providing the same level of protection that Secure-Tunnel’s computer-based customers enjoy.

Since Apple’s iPhone and other smart phones have the capability to join countless networks and are always mobile, they are constantly in search of different wireless connections, leaving the door open for data intrusion. Wireless devices like the iPhone have limited in-transit data security options and can lack the ability to secure information sent wirelessly from one machine to another. VPN Mobile provides the additional level of security needed for protected information transmission.

Designed to enable the quick delivery of multimedia and broadband data, EDGE, the Apple iPhone wireless service provider, is historically known for its vulnerability to intrusion. Secure-Tunnel VPN for iPhone is able to encrypt all EDGE data, ensuring a comprehensive privacy and data security solution for mobile users.

The abundance of wireless options like EDGE, Wi-Fi, and email on the latest mobile devices poses a genuine security threat for users, given the multiple communication features available.

The Secure-Tunnel VPN Mobile solution protects otherwise vulnerable mobile communications through strong encryption that works on both Wi-Fi and cellular data networks. The software is simple, easy to configure, and is ready within minutes and contains an email account with SSL webmail.

Transaction valued at approximately $44.6 billion in cash and stock; provides 62 percent premium to current trading price for Yahoo! shareholders; combined entity to create a more competitive company, providing superior value to shareholders, better choice and innovation for customers and partners

Microsoft Corp. today announced that it has made a proposal to the Yahoo! Inc. Board of Directors to acquire all the outstanding shares of Yahoo! common stock for per share consideration of $31 representing a total equity value of approximately $44.6 billion. Microsoft’s proposal would allow the Yahoo! shareholders to elect to receive cash or a fixed number of shares of Microsoft common stock, with the total consideration payable to Yahoo! shareholders consisting of one-half cash and one-half Microsoft common stock. The offer represents a 62 percent premium above the closing price of Yahoo! common stock on Jan. 31, 2008.

“We have great respect for Yahoo!, and together we can offer an increasingly exciting set of solutions for consumers, publishers and advertisers while becoming better positioned to compete in the online services market,” said Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer of Microsoft. “We believe our combination will deliver superior value to our respective shareholders and better choice and innovation to our customers and industry partners.”

“Our lives, our businesses, and even our society have been progressively transformed by the Web, and Yahoo! has played a pioneering role by building compelling, high-scale services and infrastructure,” said Ray Ozzie, chief software architect at Microsoft. “The combination of these two great teams would enable us to jointly deliver a broad range of new experiences to our customers that neither of us would have achieved on our own.”

The online advertising market is growing at a very fast pace, from over $40 billion in 2007 to nearly $80 billion by 2010. The resulting benefits of scale along with the associated capital costs for advertising platform providers make this a time of industry consolidation and convergence. Today this market is increasingly dominated by one player. Together, Microsoft and Yahoo! can offer a competitive choice while better fulfilling the needs of customers and partners.

“The combined assets and strong services focus of these two companies will enable us to achieve scale economics while reaching R&D critical mass to deliver innovation breakthroughs,” said Kevin Johnson, president of the Platforms & Services Division of Microsoft. “The industry will be well served by having more than one strong player, offering more value and real choice to advertisers, publishers and consumers.”

The combination will create a more efficient company with synergies in four areas: scale economics driven by audience critical mass and increased value for advertisers; combined engineering talent to accelerate innovation; operational efficiencies through elimination of redundant cost; and the ability to innovate in emerging user experiences such as video and mobile. Microsoft believes these four areas will generate at least $1 billion in annual synergy for the combined entity.

Microsoft has developed a plan and process that will include the employees of both companies to focus on the integration of the combined business. Microsoft intends to offer significant retention packages to Yahoo! engineers, key leaders and employees across all disciplines.

Microsoft believes this proposed combination would receive all necessary regulatory approvals and expects that the proposed transaction would be completed in the second half of calendar year 2008.

Microsoft is also committed to working closely with Yahoo! management and its Board of Directors as they, along with Yahoo! shareholders, evaluate this compelling proposal.

As Dell’s Global Consumer business continues to evolve, the company today announced that it will close its 140 kiosks in the United States. The Dell Direct Store model, which began in 2002, enabled customers to touch and feel Dell products before purchasing systems direct from the company. In the past six months the company has adopted a retail strategy that enables Dell to connect with customers it has not necessarily reached in the past. Dell is applying the advantages of its direct business model into retail where customers can purchase laptop and desktop computers in more than 10,000 retail outlets worldwide.

“Moving into retail is a prime example of Dell listening to its customers,” said Tony Weiss, vice president for Dell’s Global Consumer business. “Ever since we began our journey into retail, we wanted to give customers the opportunity to call, click, or visit Dell and have access to our award-winning products. This move fits in with how our broad global retail strategy is evolving.”

In addition to its global retail business, Dell is committed to its direct business, where a majority of customers choose to shop on the phone and via the Internet to buy laptops, desktops and associated products. The kiosks outside the U.S. are not affected with the changes the company is making today.

TV playback of iPod® video content is more convenient than ever with the announcement of new JVC LCD TVs with a built-in iPod dock. Each of the four new models, including three full HD 1080p sets, features JVC’s new TeleDock®, a flip-down iPod dock at the base of the set, providing a direct connection for playback through the TV.

The new JVC P-Series includes the 32-inch LT-32P679, 42-inch LT-42P789, 47-inch LT-47P789 and the 52-inch LT-52P789. The LT-32P679 is a 768p model, while the others offer 1080p resolution.

When an iPod is docked, a menu appears on the TV screen for selecting music, music shuffle or video playback. iPod can be controlled from the TV’s remote, which includes a circular keypad with a control scheme that mimics the iPod’s control wheel. Photos can also be displayed as a slide show along with music. During music playback, song title and artist name are displayed on the TV screen. During video playback, low resolution files, such as internet videos, can be displayed in a small screen mode. Higher resolution video can be shown in nine aspect modes at full screen. There’s also the option to play music files while the TV displays television programming. In addition, the iPod will charge while docked wheter the TV’s power is on or off.

Besides the iPod dock and playback features, JVC’s new P-Series LCD TVs are full featured high definition displays with a cabinet design that conveys the sets’ focus on both audio and video performance. Each features a new universal remote with direct input access, a new on-screen menu system, a side-mounted USB photo viewer, and ATSC/QAM tuning.

Connections include three HDMI inputs, two component inputs, one S-video input, SPDIF input and an analog audio output for sending sound from an iPod or the TV through a home theater system.

The sound package delivers 10 watts per channel to a pair of JVC’s exclusive oblique cone speakers. And JVC’s new Omni Surround package with equalizer offers four listening modes – movie, music, news (for news or talk show programming) and mono (for simulated stereo from mono programming).

Availability and pricing:

After a series of delays, Microsoft plans to release Office for Mac 2008 to brick-and-mortar and online stores on January 15, making this the first update in about four years. We’ve tested beta versions of the new applications over the last month without running into glitches.

Office for Mac includes Word, Excel for spreadsheets, PowerPoint for presentations and Entourage for email and time management. There’s no Microsoft Access database application for the Mac, although FileMaker’s upcoming release of Bento offers Mac users a new choice.

Unlike Microsoft Office 2007, the interface changes don’t look radically foreign next to the 2004 edition. That’s good news for anyone who doesn’t want to relearn the locations of common functions. The 2007 applications for Windows arrange functions within tabs, while the 2008 Mac software largely clusters functions within the same drop-down menus including File, Edit and View.

By and large, most of the changes focus on attempting to help users craft more attractive documents. For instance, Office for Mac features the same templates and Smart Art graphics as the Windows counterparts, including 3D and translucent designs. These are pre-built templates with 3D and translucent designs.

Now that Apple is rocking the industry why not to put some pressures on Dell and HP, bundling Windows XP every new mac, there won’t be any reason to buy from other vendors if you can get the complete solutions from Apple.

Apple should now start an aggresive marketing campaing to cement their progress and at the same time gains marketshare from PC manufacturers, and bundling XP will gives Apple more power, getting Microsoft a better price on XP won’t be difficult because Microsoft would like to let the world knows that Apple is a Windows Reseller while Apple grab marketshare away from Dell and HP.
